Reasons for Considering TreatmenT
BOTOX® can be used to treat a number of facial areas as a part of a comprehensive dental treatment plan. The following areas can be treated:
- Excessive facial wrinkles
- Large wrinkles or furrows in your forehead
- Small wrinkles or “crow’s feet” around your eyes
- A vertical “frown line” between your eyebrows
GENERAL Procedure
The procedure is about 10 minutes long and works by altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to wrinkles. Typically a small amount (1-2 cc’s) of botulinum toxin is injected into the area of the wrinkle. The injection works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles, thereby relaxing and smoothing the surface of the skin. The effects of a treatment last approximately three to six months, after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.
Depending on the location and severity of the wrinkles, your doctor will decide the appropriate number of injections, but most treatments require 3 to 5 in order to affect all the muscles involved. After the injections, you can return to your normal day as there is minimal downtime required. You will begin to notice the smoothing results within 24 to 48 hours of the treatment.
RECOVERY PROCESS
Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the BOTOX® procedure, however, following post-procedure guidelines will dramatically reduce the length and intensity of the recovery period. Patients should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after injections.
